Future Plans

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

This is just a quick heads-up (and also a test of a new function to post from Twitter to Facebool) to inform people that soon the DiggerCast will be moved over to a new home with Stormhaven Media.  You’ll still be able to access the blog via the regular address, just that everything will be a bit tidier and simpler for us!  Additionally, some DiggerFeast episodes will be recorded over the next couple of months, but the official launch won’t be for a while yet.  I may post up a short, solo teaser episode with a couple items to show you what it’s about.  Please note that the editing may be a little shoddy, and also maybe the initial episode may be too, given this is the first time I’d have performed in front of a camera, as any videos I’ve been in either had me behind the camera or have had me in for a short time, meaning this is the first actual time I have essentially carried a whole video, either by myself, or with others.  I kind of expect it to be similar to the DiggerCast to a degree, except you get to see my face and I can do it alone, which will do wonders for the production schedule!

Additionally, there will be a separate blog for the DiggerFeast and also one for the DiggerCouch (which now will comprise of experimental pilots of shows), although all of them will go through the DiggerCrew Twitter, albeit under different hashtags and titles.  Don’t worry if you don’t understand what I mean… all will become clear in due time.

Other than that, I have nothing to report, other than the fact that Gamed Up’s shows will also be hosted by Stormhaven Media, given the entire site is geared towards hosting videos and podcasts.  Stormhaven Radio will now be a child site of Stormhaven Media, which will also host its forums, meaning everything will be under a single sign in, so once you sign up to Media, you’ll have access to the forums and Radio site too… wonderful, and saves you having many logins!  Radio will have its own Twitter too, as will Media… the DiggerCrew Twitter will be kept separate but related to the other 2, given it existed first and it already has its own separate following.

That’s it for now… expect some massive changes and a lot of reorganisation over the next few months!

New episode coming soon!

Monday, March 14th, 2011

This is just a heads-up to let you all know that new episode of the DiggerCast will be up within the next couple of days, and also by the end of this month, it’ll be at a new place. More on this later.

We’re not dead!

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Honest we ain’t!

Anyway, just to inform everyone that there will be 2 new episodes of the DiggerCast coming before the end of the year in addition to the 2nd and 3rd episodes I’ve yet to upload >.>

The order of the episodes may be a little fuzzy in that I may upload November’s episode (4) first, then edit upload Eps 2 & 3 after I get back to the UK (I’ve had issues that prevented me from doing so) ; however, I will be backdating the blog posts to be in line with when they were supposed to be uploaded.  Admittedly, this’ll mean then that you’ll be listening to them a little out of order at the start, though with the format being nailed down for the show proper, it now means that there will be less confusion regarding things.  I may consider doing one final run with the Weekly Fark though, just to give it a proper sendoff, and though Ollie may or may not balk at this, but I think we should do a longer special, which will be the final one in the pre-production series.  Essentially, in this one, we’ll do the Weekly Fark, followed by the new section that replaces it, that being a few definitions from the Urban Dictionary.

It’ll make more sense when the new ep is published, but as far as a schedule goes, there will be a recording before the end of the month, and an upload around a week (maybe sooner) after.  No matter what though, the 4th episode will be edited and uploaded before eps 2 & 3.  As for the December ep, we have plans to have that uploaded for just before Xmas day, where it’ll start to more closely resemble the series proper; this means that there is no more Weekly Fark and the UurbanDictionary section will instead replace it.  Keep in mind though that even though the series will be going into production, with the first (proper) episode ideally being published by the 15th of January, it won’t be quite perfect, thougfh at least I’ve determined a show format and frequency.  It’s hoped that with properly going into production, things can start going up a gear and become a lot more defined.  Admittedly though, with my list back home, I’ll have to improvide a little, so likely I’ll just choose a site off the top of my head.  What it is, I’m not saying just yet, but watch out for the update.

Lastly, with the DiggerCast folding back into Stormhaven Radio, albeit in a more organised way, everything will be changing eventually, in terms of the path of the site, though this won’t happen just yet.  You’ll always be able to access the site via www.diggercast.com though, so overall, it may not actually affect your surfing experience, but I’m mentioning it more as a heads-up.

Watch this space for updates, and expect an episode soon, one way or another.

We’re still around & how we work

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Yup, that’s right. Of course, I have a few technical problems, mainly that my headset is missing and my desktop cannot access the internet at present! The second one will be rectified eventually, but as for the first… that could take a bit longer. Anyway, the next weekend, Ollie and I are planning a special where we’re in the same room at the same time, meaning we’ll be trying out local recording! Yes, I’m totally aware the result might be a bit crap, but hey it’s just a test! Of course, it’s not one of the 10 official test pilots (or maybe it will be), so it’s another experiment. Grtanted, the ultimate intention of this to make a fully fledge podcast out of this, but I’m using this testing period to both iron out kinks and set out guidelines for future podcasts so they are a little more solid, as after all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.  If you want to skip my ramblings, I made a summary of the more important stuff at the bottom of this post.

I expect to make screwups in the course of the remaining 8 episodes, which is why I need feedback in the first place; even comments on seemingly minor things in this podcast may be an important consideration in future ones. Admittedly though, this podcast isn’t meant to be taken too seriously, given it’s classed as a comedy podcast, although it could be rather serious in places, depending on the subject being discussed. The Weekly Farkage section may have some more serious articles and we will act accordingly and will read them before commenting further, as I personally have learnt that things aren’t always what they seem with articles. I’d rather not make a mistake like that again.

Anyway, with that aside, I hope to have the 2nd episode edited and uploaded by Saturday or Sunday. This special will most likely seem a little less professional in places due to the setup in place; it’s literally going to be an omnidirectional mic hooked up to Audacity for recording so we expect every sound to be picked up and will most likely have to edit the special too to make sure that some sounds aren’t picked up especially as the room next to the one we’re recording in will have 24 hours of traffic! Test Recording – 32khz

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Another thing I’ve learnt is that I can only have 1 MP3 per post, damn!

Anyway, this is the 32KHz MP3. If there’s any problems, then please do let me know. The MP3s work for me at least, though I’m not sure if they work for anyone else atm, so comment below in the relevent post.

Test recordings – 16khz

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

These recordings are essentially tests for quality, and also to see how they’re handled by the plugin. If I sound like a chipmunk for either of them, it’s likely I’ll have to stick to 44.1Khz in the future, which is better than 48Khz, marginally. Additionally, I’m aware that I said 16Hz and 32Hz when they both should have been Khz… whoops! The numbers are more important anyway.

New Episodes out this weekend & Future changes

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

I apoligise for not releasing these sooner. I’m still actually editing the two episodes that have been recorded and I’m also optimising them as well as locating all the links we looked at too. Additionally, I’m looking at optimising filesizes too since I learnt that I have been recording at too high a sampling rate, which increases the filesize further! Initially, I was recording at 48KHz, but since learning that the human voice tends to peak at 5KHz, it seemed rather pointless exceeding 16KHz, so this is what all episodes will be recorded at in the future. The initial recordings will be staying at 192Kbps, although I’ll be lowering them to 64Kbps, which halves the file’s footprint. What does this mean overall? Well, it means that the MP3 of each episode will be much smaller to download, with very little discernable difference in audio quality. This means it’ll make the episodes faster to upload and download.

One thing I plan to do is to record short clips of myself and Ollie saying similar stuff in 4 different clips (one each at 16KHz, 32KHz, 44.1KHz and 48KHz), then bringing them down from 192Kbps to 128Kbps (CD quality), 96Kbps and 64Kbps respectively. This will allow you to hear the differences yourselves and also compare the filesizes between them. There will always be a 128Kbps version of each podcast available, though the 64Kbps version will be the standard version. The 128K version will have to be requested and if there’s enough demand, I may also start developing an edited 192K version as well. The only 192K version available at the moment is what I term the “raw” file, which means that it has all the bits I edited out. As for why I edited them out, it’s usually because the bits were too boring, or there was a little too much dead air, or there’s certain parts I deemed inappropriate. The inappropriate parts are essentially me getting the wrong idea about something and continuing on about it, or parts I deemed unsuitable to discuss on the air.

Hello!

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

This is the new home of the DiggerCast!  When the site is properly up, you should be able to access the Phase 1 & 2 archives via the sidebar.  There won’t be much happening here for some time yet, although you’ll see the Phase 1 & 2 archives being moved here, and also as a new thing, you’ll also get to hear the Phase 2 test podcasts, which were never fully completed. There should be at least one pilot cast by the end of this year, with a few more to come, to introduce the team members properly as there will be a bigger team than usual, although they won’t all be on at the same time. I’ll be introducing them in the pilot, and adding them to the site as time goes on. Some of the people I introduce will just be guest hosts for the DiggerCast, with others being proper hosts, joining me when they have time. Another few will be appearing on another podcast I have planned, or on Stormhaven Radio, though that’s a while off yet.

I’m hoping that with Phase 3.5, I’ll have finally gotten things right!
